ilniaus Žemynos gimnazija’s website struggled with deep navigation, outdated mobile layout, and lacked assistive navigation—making it hard for parents, teachers, and students to quickly find essential information.

Vilniaus Žemynos gimnazija is a public secondary school in Šeškinė, Vilnius, serving around 800 students and employing about 80 teachers. It offers diverse educational programs including Cambridge classes, inclusive education, libraries, and specialist services like social and health support

The challenge

The site’s dense menu structure with multiple levels (“Apie mus”, “Struktūra ir kontaktai”, “Paslaugos”) made important information—like admission news, support services, and event updates—difficult to locate, especially on mobile or when time-sensitive posts (social support, choral events) were buried

Further, the site lacked clear skip links, ARIA roles, consistent heading hierarchy, and image alt attributes—essential for screen-reader users. Content load time was sluggish due to large media files and missing performance optimizations, harming UX for families on data-limited connections.

WCAG 2.1 AA structure implemented

What We Did

We redesigned the website using WordPress and Elementor, creating a mobile-first layout that allows visitors to reach content in fewer steps. The entire menu structure was reworked to improve clarity and accessibility—grouping content under simplified categories such as “Naujienos”, “Apie mus”, and “Paslaugos”.

To meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards, we added skip links, fixed heading levels (H1–H3), applied ARIA roles, and ensured all new content includes alt text and keyboard navigation support. Layout spacing and contrast ratios were enhanced to support users with visual impairments.

We also optimized performance with lazy loading, media compression, and minified code to improve load speed. School administrators were trained to use content templates, making it easier to post announcements, updates, and student activities without external help.
